Kyam spent time with the community curator group this week to learn more about their food stories of Rochdale. Kyam invited members of the group to cook a recipe that held a particular resonance for them – either a food from their childhood, a key dish of a cultural celebration or just their favourite meal. Rina, Olga and Suzanna cooked dishes for Kyam talking about the flavours of their food and the stories associated with each ingredient. Rina made Nastar, a traditional Indonesian sweet of pineapple jam filled pasty. Made for special occasions the mouthful of pineapple and soft pastry takes time to carefully prepare. Olga and Suzanna cooked their Ukrainian staple of potato pancakes and borsch, both of which were served with sour cream.

The larger group got together with Kyam to talk about food memories around the themes of school dinners and foods that nurture, their conversation informing our developing museum displays around each topic. After all the talking, we invited photographer Rebecca Lupton to join us and take portraits of each of the community curators. The portraits will inform Kyam’s digital drawings that will be on display in the Dining Room once the building re-opens.
