Having visited the Museum in the spring, we were invited back to join their regular Foodie Group. MJM shares the history of the Jewish community in Manchester and its rich and varied heritage. This heritage is readily expressed through food. Jewish culture spans a range of cuisines from Middle Eastern to North African and Eastern European. The Foodie group meets monthly to discuss, cook and eat food inspired by stories from the museum collection, artists and events the museum programme, as well as members of the group’s own heritage and backgrounds. Previous Foodie Groups have included making vegetable cakes, challah bread, spicy aubergine and tomato relish and cheese and onion pie.
We joined the group, as they were making quick pickles and sauerkraut, a fermented cabbage relish. Working in pairs, we prepared and bottled the two different pickles, taking time at the end of the session to share some humus, fresh bread and our quick pickled carrots, beetroot and onions.
Delicious!
