When the Dining Room opens it will be a space that is for the diverse communities of Rochdale to come together, share food and learn about the Borough’s history. So how do we start to tell the story of Rochdale? And how do we use food as the connecting thread?
Through considering a single ingredient or object in the museum collection, we have been mapping out the different connections to communities across the borough. For example, a Victorian sweet making mould took us on a journey from Rochdale’s Pioneers selling sugar to memories of making marzipan sweets at Christmas, eating sweets at Eid and the contemporary South Asian sweet shops on Milkstone Road. As well as this, we have been thinking through Rochdales unique food history, from the anti-corn League and Cotton Famine Road to Rochdale Pioneers, Middle Jam factory, Pakeeza yoghurt and the worlds biggest pancake.
