This commission focuses on creating a multi-object installation that will suspend above in Rochdale’s vaulted ceiling. Our artist Aliyah will use various ways to engage with the community, such as hosting events, providing creative kits, and leading workshops. Her aim is to encourage people to freely share their ideas, stories, and objects related and centered around Rochdale’s food heritage, from the Co-Operative movement to modern South Asian cuisine.
The installation invites our diverse community in Rochdale to get involved by sharing or making their own objects to be included in the final display.
About the Artist
Aliyah Hussain is an artist, designer, and educator based in West Yorkshire. With a background in performance and a practice rooted in collaboration, her work incorporates ceramics, sound, and drawing with a focus on collage. Since 2018 she has worked to collaborate on ambitious community projects across the North West.
Aliyah says “I am so excited by the opportunity to work with the community curators to co-create a multi-object installation for the dining room space. I think bringing clay into the project and using it as a place to start the research will help navigate and guide the processes and outcomes. The connection between food and ceramics is an intimate one and the preparation of both by hand includes many technical crossovers eg. kneading, piping, rolling, cutting, pressing etc. We tell our stories through the food we make, and clay is a uniquely transformative material that allows us to imagine what we might want to see in the future.”
