Create Rochdale CPD: Making Cultural Education Accessible to Children and Young People with SEND

Together we will explore how we can make cultural education more accessible to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities who are living in Rochdale Borough. The event will include:

– Presentations from speakers with different perspectives, experiences and insights

– Tour of Jolly Josh – a centre providing play, social and hydrotherapy-based sessions for children and young adults with complex medical needs and physical disabilities.

– A practical workshop demonstrating how cultural education activities can be adapted to meet different needs

1.40pm Enabling Access and Nurturing Ambition: Disabled Artist Helena Ascough will share her experience of being a disabled young person with a passion for the arts.

1.55pm Neurodiversity and Creativity: Alice Giles, North West Regional Lead at Pinc College will share her experience of providing art, digital art and complementary studies for neurodivergent 16 – 25 year olds within a specialist college for creative education.

2.10pm Supporting families: Liz Dodd will provide a short tour of the facilities at Jolly Josh and talk about some of the specific barriers that families with complex medical needs and physical disabilities often face when accessing cultural education activities.

2.50pm Workshop: Martina Coggins Director of Tracing Steps Theatre and Dance Company will deliver a workshop designed specifically for teachers and creative practitioners working with individuals with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
‘In this session, I will share a collection of adaptable games and activities drawing on my dance and theatre background, offering creative ways to engage participants with diverse needs. You will learn how to modify these activities, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all. This workshop will equip you with tools to foster a supportive and dynamic learning environment, empowering every participant to thrive.’
